Carolyn Nowakowski Psy DI am a licensed clinical psychologist in Tinley Park, Illinois who works with adults, couples and families. I use an integrative approach to therapy, identifying the strategies that work best for each person and situation, but I especially draw from cognitive-behavioral, family-systems and psychodynamic therapy.  I’ve been a clinical psychologist since 1997 and I now have more than 28 years of experience in mental health care.

I work with people with a wide range of problem areas, including depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship and life transition issues.   I have expertise helping adults overcome the scars of childhood neglect or abuse (verbal, physical, sexual).   My work with couples includes those struggling with conflict, disconnection, infidelity and communication problems.  I work with families who are trying to navigate life changes due to the physical or psychological illness of a family member, caretaking responsibilities, or grief reactions.

For many people, the decision to meet with a psychologist is not an easy one. One of my first and most important goals when meeting with a new client is to help that person feel comfortable enough to start their healing process. True listening, straightforward communication and even a bit of humor all can help someone feel comfortable enough to face the challenges of change. In therapy, I help people renew the strengths they may have forgotten they had, replace old negative messages with more realistic ones, and take on the challenge of positive changes.  I focus on being a guide along each client’s individual road to a more fulfilling life.

I work to blend a here & now focus with attention to longstanding patterns that may be a barrier to a person living as fully as possible in the present. I strive to help people find balance in their lives and lasting, positive change.

I received my Doctorate in Psychology (Psy.D.) from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 1996.  My undergraduate studies were completed at DePaul University, Chicago, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I am a member of the American Psychological Association and the Illinois Psychological Association.

In addition to providing therapy services in my office, I am available to meet on-site with older adults living at Peace Village in Palos Park, Illinois.

My previous experience includes work with adult clients and their families at a long-term care facility for persons with persistent mental illness. I ran a successful intensive treatment program for persons with long-term depression, anxiety and trauma reactions; provided group therapy for sexually abused teenagers and adults, and supervised graduate students in psychology.
